This is an orthopaedic trauma ward, caring for patients who have had accidents and injuries.

These can range from major spinal injuries, head injuries and multiple fractures to a variety of smaller orthopaedic injuries and conditions.

Most patients are admitted via the Emergency Department; others come from orthopaedic clinics or straight from home.

We focus on stabilising the patient and where necessary preparing them for surgery.

This can be a stressful time for the patient and their families, so care focuses on the psychological impact of the injury or accident.

Many patients are elderly people who have sustained hip fractures.

Location

Brunel Treatment Centre (part of the Great Western Hospital) - third floor (please see Floor plan).

Visiting

This information shows the normal arrangements for visiting patients on this ward, but temporary restrictions may be in place, so please always first check Coronavirus (COVID-19): Visitor guidance.

Please contact us for visiting times.

We have protected meal times to ensure patients are able to eat at regular periods without being disturbed.

If there are specific reasons, we are happy to accommodate visitors on the ward outside of these times and are particularly keen to invite friends and carers into the ward to assist with the feeding of patients.

Contact

Tel: 01793 646353 or 01793 646024

Patients, families and their carers have access to a dedicated phone line on each ward for direct communication; the phone can be taken to the patient's bedside - please ask a member of staff for details.

We ask that one member of the family conveys information to other family members, to avoid several calls to the ward.
