We offer support to help you quit smoking during your pregnancy and after birth.
Smoking harms your baby’s growth and development and quitting smoking in pregnancy is the single most important thing you can do to protect your baby.
The earlier you can quit in pregnancy the bigger the impact that it makes, but quitting at any point in pregnancy is beneficial. Within 24 hours of your last puff of a cigarette, your baby will be getting as much oxygen as they need.
Our friendly Health in Pregnancy Team can work with you to develop a personal plan to support you to quit as soon as possible. We will arrange to see you in the comfort of your own home, or another place of your choosing.
Reasons to quit smoking in pregnancy
- You are more likely to have a healthier pregnancy and a healthier baby
- Your baby is less likely to be born very early. Premature babies may have breathing, feeding and health problems, and often have to remain in hospital for a long time
- Your baby is less likely to be born with a low birth weight. Babies of smokers are on average, lighter than other babies, which can cause problems during labour and after birth. For example, they may struggle to keep warm and are more likely to get infections
- You will reduce the risk of stillbirth
- You will reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also known as "cot death".
Stopping smoking now will also help your baby later in life. Children whose parents smoke are more likely to suffer from asthma and other serious illnesses that may need hospital treatment.
