Hazel Ward is an antenatal and postnatal ward on the second floor of the Great Western Hospital.

We care for you if you require hospital care during your pregnancy, or if you need your labour to be induced. We also care for you and your baby after birth.

What to expect

Hazel Ward has three four-bedded bays with shared bathroom facilities next door to them. There are hand-washing facilities within each bay.

We also have 18 single rooms available with en-suite facilities.

During the day we have an excellent team of five Midwives or Nurses, Two Maternity Support Worker, one Maternity Care Assistant and a Ward Clerk..

At night we have four Midwives, One Maternity Care Assistant and One Maternity Support Worker.

Amenity rooms

We offer you the opportunity to request a single side (Amenity) room with en-suite bathroom. These rooms are subject to availability and are chargeable. Please ask a member of staff for information about charge for these rooms.

If you wish to book an amenity room, please inform your Midwife in the Delivery Suite.


All meals are provided during your stay on Hazel ward. All food and drink are for patients only.

Breakfast is delivered to patients at their bedside around 7.15am.

Lunch is served around 12.30pm, Patients are able to select from a menu of hot food which is delivered to their bedside.

The evening meal consisting of soup of the day, a variety of sandwiches, and fruit etc usually served at approximately 5.30pm.

We can cater for your medical, ethnic, or other dietary requirements, please speak to a member of staff who will be able to make arrangements for you.


Due to the nature of the ward, it is a secure unit. All visitors to the ward need to use the intercom system on the wall outside the door to gain access.

Please ensure that all visitors know the full name of the person they are visiting, otherwise access may be denied.

Electronic baby tagging is in operation on Hazel Ward.

All babies when delivered wear a tag around their ankle and an alarms sound if a baby is near any ward exits and staff are alerted to which entrance to ensure security for our babies.


During the induction of labour process one partner is permitted to stay overnight to support the mother.

Following the birth, one partner is permitted to stay overnight, this is for the purpose of supporting the mother and baby and to promote family bonding.

A recliner chair is provided for the partner overnight and we respectfully request you do not sleep in the bed with your partner, because of the weight limit of the beds and infection control risk.

We would like to remind all partners who stay overnight they must remain fully clothed at all times.

Visiting times

  • Birth Partner (during antenatal period): 9am - 9pm
  • Birth Partner (during induction of labour / postnatal period): 24 hours per day
  • Siblings: 9am - 9pm
  • All other visitors: 2pm - 8pm
  • Please be advised that one additional visitor is allow alongside the birth partner and children under 16, unless they are siblings of the new-born, are not permitted access into the ward at any given time.
