Local author brings story time to the Neonatal Unit for World Mental Health Day

Families on the Neonatal Unit at Great Western Hospitals enjoyed a special story time session with local author Kate Claxton, organised to mark World Mental Health Day on Saturday 10 October.

Kate visited the unit to share her stories with parents and their babies, creating a relaxed and welcoming opportunity for families to enjoy story time together in the nursery.

It was a chance for parents to connect with one another, enjoy some time with their babies and experience a little moment of normality within their neonatal journey.

The session was arranged by Becky Bracey, Neonatal Family Support Sister, as part of her work supporting the emotional wellbeing of families during their neonatal journey.

The event was supported by local charity Tiny but Mighty, who generously funded a selection of food from Little Grazey for families to enjoy. The charity also provided a book for every family attending, giving parents a special keepsake to take home.

Becky Bracey said: “Our neonatal families go through so much, and it’s really important that we create opportunities to celebrate them and support their wellbeing alongside the clinical care their babies receive.

“It was lovely to do something a little different on the unit and see our parents enjoying some food, stories and time together. These moments of normality can be so valuable when families are spending so much of their time in hospital.

“A huge thank you to Kate for giving her time and to Tiny but Mighty for their incredible support. The food from Little Grazey was a real treat for our parents, and having a book for each family to take home made the morning even more special.”

The session is one of a number of initiatives being developed on the Neonatal Unit to support families’ emotional wellbeing and create a welcoming environment for parents during their baby’s hospital stay.
