With almost a third of eligible people in Swindon not taking up their invitation for breast screening, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is encouraging those who have been invited to book their appointment this Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Around 30 per cent of people eligible for breast screening in Swindon have not attended their appointment, despite screening playing a vital role in the early detection of breast cancer.
The NHS Breast Screening Programme invites women aged between 50 and 70 for a mammogram every three years. The screening can identify cancers before symptoms develop, helping ensure treatment can begin as early as possible and improving the chances of a successful recovery.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the UK, but when it is detected early, treatment is often more effective and outcomes are significantly improved.
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Great Western Hospitals is reminding anyone who has received an invitation letter, text message or appointment information to come forward and attend their screening.
A spokesperson for Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "Breast screening saves lives. We know that attending an appointment can sometimes feel daunting, but the examination is quick and is one of the most effective ways of detecting breast cancer at an early stage.
"Early diagnosis gives people the best possible chance of successful treatment and recovery. If you have received an invitation and have not yet booked or attended your appointment, we would strongly encourage you to do so."
People who are eligible for breast screening and have received an invitation should follow the instructions in their letter or SMS message to arrange an appointment.
