Neurologist's groundbreaking digital Parkinson's care app recognised nationally

Dr Kinan Muhammed, Consultant Neurologist, has received national recognition for his pioneering work transforming care for people living with Parkinson's disease after winning the prestigious 'Analogue to Digital' category at the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards.

The award celebrates Dr Muhammed's development of an innovative smartphone app that enables patients to actively monitor their condition using their own devices, helping to revolutionise the way Parkinson's care is delivered.

Traditionally, Parkinson's care has relied heavily on periodic clinic appointments that capture only a snapshot of a patient's condition. Dr Muhammed's technology shifts this approach towards continuous, personalised monitoring, providing clinicians and patients with a more comprehensive understanding of symptoms and disease progression.

The app measures a range of key functions, including voice, balance, walking, finger dexterity, reaction time, rest and postural tremor, as well as cognitive performance. By collecting regular data between appointments, it empowers patients to take a more active role in managing their health while supporting more informed clinical decision-making.

Originally developed for people living with Parkinson's disease, the technology has now been rolled out across numerous hospitals throughout the UK and has also gained international adoption in the United States.

Clinical evaluations in both countries have demonstrated significant benefits for patients, including increased knowledge, confidence and empowerment in managing their condition. The technology has also delivered advantages for healthcare systems through improved clinical outcomes, greater efficiency and reductions in hospital admissions.

Building on its success in Parkinson's disease, the technology is now being expanded to support thousands of patients living with dementia and other neurological conditions, alongside their caregivers, opening up new opportunities to improve care and quality of life for even more people.

The Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards recognise healthcare professionals and teams who have demonstrated outstanding innovation and impact in improving patient care across the UK.
