This is a small t-shaped plastic device that is inserted into your womb. There are different brands, please note some contain silver.

This releases the hormone progestogen into the womb.

This works to thicken the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to move through the cervix, it also thins the lining of the womb.

Most people will continue to ovulate with the hormonal coil.

The hormonal coil is more than 99% effective, and depending on the type fitted, can be left in place from three to eight years.

You may not be suitable for the hormonal coil if you have or have had breast cancer, have problems with your womb or cervix including cancer, have liver disease, have unexplained bleeding, have or have had heart disease or stroke, have an untreated STI or pelvic infection.

The coil can be fitted at any time in your cycle so long as you are not pregnant.

If it is fitted after the first seven days of your cycle you will need to abstain from sex or use condoms for the next seven days until it starts working.

This coil can also be fitted up to 48 hours after birth or from four weeks after birth.

It can be fitted straight after an abortion or miscarriage.

The coil is long lasting and periods can become lighter, shorter and less painful, or even stop.

It is safe to use when breastfeeding and can be used if you cannot have oestrogen containing contraception with no effect on fertility.

In some cases, users may experience the following side effects:

  • changes to period
  • headaches
  • acne
  • breast tenderness
  • small cysts forming on the ovaries.

A minor procedure is required for fitting which has small risks of damage to the womb, infection, pain and expulsion/rejection.
