Volunteers needed to help hospital patients feel good and boost wellbeing

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is appealing for volunteers to join its growing ‘Beauty & Uplift’ team and help make a meaningful and positive difference to the lives of patients in hospital.

Launched in early 2025, the Trust's Beauty & Uplift Volunteer Service was developed in response to feedback from inpatients, many of whom shared that one of the things they missed the most during long hospital stays was being unable to have their hair cut or get their nails manicured.

The service aims to improve patients' wellbeing and self-esteem by offering simple pampering and grooming services, including haircuts, shaving, hand massages and basic manicures. While these may seem like only small gestures, they can have a significant impact on a person's confidence and comfort and can improve their experience during their hospital stay.

The Trust’s Voluntary Services Team (VST) is particularly keen to hear from qualified hairdressers and barbers who are available to spare just a couple of hours each week to support patients. Beauty & Uplift Volunteers may use their own equipment, though the VST has equipment for use during volunteering sessions if needed.

"A hospital stay can often leave patients feeling disconnected from their normal routines and personal care. Something as simple as a haircut, shave or hand massage can help someone feel more like themselves again," said Leanne Abbott-Brown, Volunteer Co-ordinator.

"Our Beauty & Uplift Volunteers help provide moments of comfort, dignity and human connection. Looking good and feeling pampered can have a positive impact on confidence, mood and wellbeing, particularly for patients who may have been in hospital for some time. We're excited to welcome more volunteers who would like to help us deliver this valued service."

The VST are also looking to encourage individuals who are interested in providing hand massages and manicures to come forward to offer their support. No formal qualifications are required for these roles, as full training will be provided.

All applicants will be required to complete the Trust's Volunteer recruitment process, including the necessary checks, mandatory training and induction.
