UniWee™ prototypes delivered to the Emergency Department for final testing phase

Following three years of development, UniWee™ prototypes have been delivered to the Trust’s Emergency Department.

Developed by teams in the Emergency Department and Trauma and Orthopaedics, the UniWee™ design is based on a male urinal bottle with a wider opening for universal use, including female and younger patients.

This innovative product allows female patients to urinate lying down, reducing the pain and risk of injury from moving and improving the dignity and comfort of female patients.

UniWee™ will save valuable staff time and address gender inequality in patient care, with teams currently spending time each day modifying products designed for male anatomy.

Over the next month, staff will trial the UniWee™ prototype with patients and provide feedback to OmniPac, the manufacturer, who will make final adjustments before full-scale production begins in the autumn.

UniWee™ is a cost-effective and sustainable solution which has the potential to save the Trust thousands of pounds each year.

The final product will launch on the NHS Supply Chain in autumn 2025, making the product available to NHS organisations across the country.

Born in Swindon, UniWee™ is expected to be adopted beyond the UK, with the manufacturer already gaining interest from healthcare systems internationally.

Luisa Goddard, Chief Nurse, said:

“We are incredibly proud of the progress of the UniWee™ and I am excited to see how this simple and dignified solution will benefit female patients in Swindon and beyond.

“This is a great example of NHS staff developing a solution to a longstanding problem and shows what an innovative organisation we are. I know it’s been hard work and a lengthy process to bring this idea to reality, but the positive impact on the patient experience is immeasurable.”
