New local strategic direction

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has launched a new local strategic direction describing the Trust’s vision and priorities until 2028 and forming the foundation for greater collaboration between local health and care organisations.

This important document was developed in response to the complex challenges faced by the NHS, including a growing and ageing population, the diverse needs of different communities and the huge demand facing the whole health and care system.

Collaboration and partnership are at the heart of the strategic direction with strong themes of integration, co-creation, prevention and patient-centred care.

The strategic direction shows that stronger collaboration between NHS, local authority, voluntary and independent organisations is needed to improve outcomes for patients and the life chances of local people.

It compliments the work the Trust is doing as part of a hospital group with Bath and Salisbury and forthcoming initiatives such as the national 10 Year Plan for the NHS, which will set out three key shifts - from treatment to prevention, from hospital to community, and from analogue to digital.

Vision and priorities from 2025 - 2028

Four strategic pillars pinpoint the Trust’s priorities:

  • Outstanding care - Continuous quality improvement and co-creation of services with local communities, with a focus on prevention and early intervention.
  • Valued teams - Investing in training, resources, and wellbeing, while bringing teams together with the Improving Together approach.
  • Better together - Collaborative and integrated working to improve quality of care and address health inequalities in local communities.
  • Sustainable future - Maximise research, innovation and digital opportunities, spend wisely, and deliver on carbon net zero.

Shaped by staff and local people

Almost 2,000 people helped to shape the strategic direction through face-to-face engagement events, surveys and meetings with staff, volunteers, patients, public and partner organisations.

This engagement will continue throughout the next three years as the Trust develops services in partnership with the people who use them and know them best.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved and shared their experiences and thank you in advance for your continued support as we begin working together to deliver it.
