Stephen, Consultant, Emergency Department

Stephen - life story 184x260I started at Great Western about eight years ago as a consultant, and now I'm clinical lead of the Emergency Department (ED).

Everyone I've worked with so far has been very keen to help me - it's so supportive at all levels.

The Trust is very forward looking, is keen to look at changes, and will listen to people's ideas.

Personally, I'm very keen to listen to all members of staff and get them to drive change within the ED.

When people come to us in the ED they are typically at a crisis point and our role is to, firstly, find out what that crisis is, what the medical element of it is, and try and help them come to terms with it.

Obviously, we are also involved with the more depressing events of people's lives, and our role is to then make that as easy as possible.

We're very conscious of our role in changing people's lives and I'd say we're caring, friendly and driven.

This extends to our own lives.

As a team of consultants, we run our rotas in a very open way, and that allows me to spend time with my family, and do my hobbies.

I think you'd be surprised by the amount of people who want to come and work here!

People can be a little sniffy about working in Swindon and I don't understand why as I actually have more people wanting jobs with us at the moment than doctors I can employ!

Great People. Great Place. Great Western Hospitals.
