Hazel Ward is an antenatal and postnatal ward on the second floor of the Great Western Hospital.
We care for you if you require hospital care during your pregnancy, or if you need your labour to be induced.
We care for both mothers and their babies after birth.

What to expect
Hazel Ward has three four-bedded bays with shared bathroom facilities next door to them.
There are hand-washing facilities within each bay.
Hazel Ward is equipped with electronic beds and you will be shown how to use the hand control when you arrive on the ward.
In addition to this we also have 18 single rooms available with en-suite facilties.
Daily we have an excellent team of five Midwives, one Maternity Support Worker, two Nurse Auxiliaries and a Ward Clerk on duty during the day.
At night we have four Midwives and two Nurse Auxiliaries.
We offer you the opportunity to request a single side room with en-suite bathroom.
Please ask a member of staff for information about costs.
If you wish to book an amenity room, please inform your Midwife in the Delivery Suite.

Amenity rooms are subject to availibilty and for postnatal patients only.
This is a patient/visitor sitting room with a small kitchen area for everyone to make refreshments.
There is also a cubicle for anyone who wishes quiet time or to feed their baby in privacy.
Breakfast is delivered to patients at their bedside around 7.15am.
Lunch is a cold meal consisting of a variety of sandwiches, fruit etc usually served at approximately 12.30pm.
A mini canteen system operates on the ward for the evening meal at around 5.30pm, where patients can select meals.
Staff will be happy to assist you if you are unable to collect your own meals.
We cater for your medical, ethnic or other dietary requirements and serve hot drinks at set times during the day.
Tea and coffee is available at 10.00am and 3.00pm, as well as overnight.
Due to the nature of the ward, it is a secure unit.
All visitors to the ward need to use the intercom system on the wall outside the door to gain access.
Please ensure that all visitors know the full name of the person they are visiting, otherwise access may be denied.
Electronic baby tagging is in operation on Hazel Ward.
All babies when delivered wear a tag around their ankle and an alarms sound if a baby is near any ward exits and staff are alerted to which entrance to ensure security for our babies.
During the induction of labour process one partner is permitted to stay overnight to support the mother.
Following the birth, one partner is permitted to stay overnight, this is for the purpose of supporting the mother and baby and to promote family bonding.
A chair is provided for the partner overnight and we respectfully request you do not sleep in the bed with your partner, because of the weight limit of the beds and infection control risk.
We would like to remind all partners who stay overnight they must remain fully clothed at all times.
We have a lovely enclosed courtyard named in honour of Mr Peter Forbes-Smith; one of our Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologists who sadly passed away.
Peter's Garden is available for mothers and their babies as well as their families and staff to enjoy.
It is open during the daytime and when weather permits.
Parents can take their babies outside to enjoy the garden area, but they should be transported in the cots.
Parents are asked to refrain from taking their babies too close to the windows as it is likely to cause our security alarms to be activated.

- Siblings: 9.00am - 9.00pm
- All other visitors: 2.00pm - 8.00pm
- Please be advised that children under 16, unless they are siblings of the newborn, are not permitted access into the ward at any given time.

Patients, families and their carers have access to a dedicated phone line on each ward for direct communication; the phone can be taken to the patient's bedside - please ask a member of staff for details.
We ask that one member of the family conveys information to other family members, to avoid several calls to the ward.
