Outpatient physiotherapy: Pelvic health and continence service

The service specialises in:

  • Bladder and bowel dysfunction in women and men
  • Children with 'giggle' incontinence and bladder and bowel lifestyle advice
  • Musculoskeletal conditions arising before and until six weeks after delivery
  • Third- and fourth-degree tears after delivery
  • Post-operative care after breast surgery
  • Advice, support and guidance 

We provide antenatal and post-natal assessment treatment and advice for conditions such as:

  • Posture in pregnancy, positions of ease, core stability exercises and gait rehabilitation 
  • Self-management and safe exercise in pregnancy
  • Abdominal muscle weakness
  • Diastasis recti or divarication rectus abdominus muscles (DRAM)
  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP)
  • Painful coccyx (coccydynia)
  • Bladder and bowel continence
  • Pelvic floor muscle weakness or damage

Following assessment and recommendation by your clinician, you can purchase:

  • Walking aids
  • Support belts
  • Hot/cold packs
  • Pressure balls
  • Continence probes

Antenatal back pain class

This is a video containing advice and exercises to help with Ante natal or Post natal pain.

Adults

Bladder and bowel dysfunction in women

We provide physiotherapy for conditions such as:

  • Urinary stress incontinence
  • Urinary urge incontinence
  • Pelvic floor weakness
  • Post natal perineal trauma
  • Pelvic organ prolapse 

Dyspareunia and vaginismus

We provide treatments and advice on:

  • Pelvic floor exercises
  • Anal sphincter exercises
  • Defecation dynamics
  • Lifestyle advice
  • Bladder retraining
  • Neuromuscular stimulation and biofeedback
  • Intra-vaginal devices and other adjuncts

Breast cancer

We provide help with:

  • Shoulder mobility problems post breast surgery
  • Management of cording 

Bladder and bowel dysfunction in men

We provide help with:

  • Urology: post-surgical care and advice
  • Pelvic floor muscle re-education
  • Anal sphincter exercises
  • Biofeedback and neuromuscular stimulation
  • Defecation dynamics
