Acute Medical Unit (AMU)

The Unit assess, investigate and treats patients admitted urgently from home by their GP, or from the Emergency Department.

It is made up of two main areas:

  • Brunel Treatment Centre, ground floor:
    • Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC)
Located in Cherwell, this is for patients who do not require admission to a ward but require further hospital treatment before being discharged. Patients are usually referred from the Emergency Department or from General Practice. It is accessed via the Cherwell reception area.
To minimise infection risk, patients must enter via the main hospital building (rather than the CAU entrance).
    • Shalbourne Medical Assessment Unit (MAU), incorporating the Short Stay Unit
Patients who are referred with a low suspicion of COVID-19 come here.
To minimise infection risk, patients must enter via the main hospital building (rather than the CAU entrance).
    • COVID-19 Assessment Unit (CAU)
GP referrals and ambulance patients at high suspicion of having COVID-19 enter through the dedicated CAU entrance unless they need the facilities of the COVID-19 Resuscitation Area in the Emergency Department.
  • GWH, third floor:
    • Linnet Ward - incorporating Enhanced Care beds. This provides early treatment and stabilisation for patients with acute medical conditions who are at low risk of having COVID-19.
