About the STP

The whole NHS is facing unprecedented challenges - as we are all living longer and the population is growing, more demands are being placed on the health services which is causing operational and financial problems.

We are working with other health and social care organisations from across Bath and North East Somerset (B&NES), Swindon and Wiltshire, to agree a plan for how we will work together to address these challenges over the next five years.

This plan is called the Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP).

Every health and care system in England will produce an STP, showing how organisations can work together to maintain quality, meet targets and sort out finances over the next few years.

Map showing our Sustainability and Transformation Plan (STP) areaThis follows the publication of the NHS Five Year Forward View in 2014, which called for different models of care in the NHS and greater collaboration between hospitals and other parts of the health and social care system.

Working across B&NES, Swindon and Wiltshire, this joint approach gives the opportunity to make big changes to the way we address the needs of local people at a time when quality, services and finances are all under immense pressure.

Our local plan is being led by James Scott, Chief Executive of Royal United Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in Bath.

Key priorities

  • More focus on prevention of ill health and earlier intervention
  • Transforming Primary Care
  • Making best use of technology and our public estate
  • A modern workforce
  • Improved collaboration across our hospital trusts
