Dedicated unit at the Swindon Intermediate Care Centre (SwICC)

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has invested almost £400,000 in a new Medical Day Unit (MDU) at the Swindon Intermediate Care Centre (SwICC), creating more space for local patients with long term health conditions, such as crohn's and asthma who require intravenous medical treatments.

The new unit is expected to see up to 20 patients each day and has been furnished with nine new reclining chairs as well as, privacy screens for comfort, as patients sit through long hours of treatment.

Some of these chairs have a feature to help patients out of their seats once they complete their treatment, which is incredibly helpful for those with restricted mobility.

The dedicated treatment unit is now open for treatment from Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm.

The MDU will also free up more space for cancer patients in the Coate Water Unit (CWU) and help to reduce waiting times.

Commenting on the launch, one of the MDU project leads and lead cancer nurse, Helen Winter said: "The new equipment, dedicated treatment area and increased capacity will enable us to provide the best standard of care possible to our patients and help us treat them sooner.

Everything is running smoothly and most importantly, our patients feel supported and cared for.

"The opening of the new unit was down to the fabulous teamwork within GWH and it was so exciting to have been a part of it."

Mark Harrison, one of the MDU's first patients said: "I've been receiving treatment in this hospital for eight years now and it's brilliant to see the service expanding.

"I use a walking frame and it's much easier for me to go in for my treatment, now that the MDU is based on the ground floor in SwICC. I don't have to wait to take a lift up either.

"I didn't know what to expect from being treated in a new place, but there were so many familiar faces and the staff made me feel confident and comfortable.

They do such a wonderful job for us."
