Emily scoops Open University national award

Student nurse award 191204Student nurse, Emily Gwinnett, has been presented with the 'Most Inspirational Student' award from the Open University.

Emily is working towards a nursing degree.

She works part time on Ampney Ward at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and spends 60 per cent of her time studying, including two days a week on placement at the hospital.

She received the award from the Open University after beating 27 students from across the country to the title.

"I was nominated by my practice tutor for the award, and I was absolutely thrilled," she said. "I was nominated for how I juggle my work and student schedule, especially as I have a child at home with a learning disability which means I have extra to contend with in my personal life as well.

"I've also had good reports from the other placement wards, and I have managed my first year of nursing well and passed all my assignments.

"I am doing this to make a better life for my family and am so proud of myself for winning this award. It made all the hard work I've put in worthwhile and made the times I felt I couldn't do it a distant memory. I feel truly humbled."

Karen Storey, Open University tutor, who nominated Emily for the award, was impressed with Emily's determination and perseverance to achieve her goal of becoming a nurse.

"Emily studied at college before obtaining a job as a health care assistant at GWH and studying through the OU has allowed her to never give up on her dream to become a nurse," she said.

Students who opt to work alongside their study ensure a level of financial stability, and help the Trust to continue to grow its workforce with nursing and midwifery staff.
