Good News: Radiotherapy Unit update

Building gets official go-ahead

Many of you will have read the news earlier this month about the Radiotherapy Appeal successfully reaching its £2.9m target.

The Radiotherapy Unit will be built and operated by Oxford University Hospitals NHS FT (OUH) here on the GWH site.

At the time we announced that we'd reached our fundraising goal, we were still waiting to hear whether the Department of Health and Social Care were going to approve OUH request for a loan for the rest of the funds (around £16m).

I'm delighted to be able to share the news that on Friday we received confirmation that the Secretary of State has given his approval of the loan to OUH.

This marks the final major milestone in our efforts to provide this essential service locally so that patients will no longer have to travel to and from Oxford for daily treatment.

None of this could have been possible without the support of thousands of fundraisers across the local community and its great we can now move to the next phase.

Early in the New Year we will be working with colleagues in OUH to prepare for the construction which we would expect to begin in the second half of 2019.

We will share a more detailed timeline with you all once it is developed.

It's another great piece of news about exciting developments on this site which we can look forward to as we head into 2019.

Merry Christmas!
