Are you at school or college and thinking about a career in healthcare? Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating National Careers Week by offering young people the opportunity to get a taste of what it's like to work in the NHS by signing up for a work experience placement.

More than 1.3 million people work for the NHS in England, and there are more than 350 different careers to choose from.

In an average year, the Trust arranges about 400 work experience placements at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon and in community hospitals and teams across Wiltshire.

Work experience placements are open to students aged 14 (Year 10) and above, and you can apply online. Placements are available throughout the year, but anyone who'd like to sign up is asked to apply six months in advance.

Nicola Green, Training and Development Lead for the Wider Workforce, said: "Work experience is a great way to get an insight into a career in the NHS. It can really help build your confidence and is an excellent way to find out if you are suited to a particular job.

"We take work experience students from the age of 14 and where possible we will set students real-life tasks. You don't need any specific skills or qualifications, but we are looking for people who have a strong interest in healthcare.

"We run placements all year round but advise you to get your application in as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Our website offers some top tips on how you can apply."

As well as work experience, the Trust runs the popular Dare to Doctor, Dare to Nurse and Dare to Deliver programmes during the summer, which invite Year 12 students to shadow doctors, nurses and midwives on the wards, learn about basic clinical skills and gain support for medical school interviews.

To apply for work experience at the Trust, visit our Working for us section and complete the online form.
The Trust will also come to you, and regularly attends careers events at schools and colleges. Those recently visited include Nova Herod and New College in Swindon, St John's, Marlborough and Malmesbury School.
