Take part in a thrilling adventure for GWH

breast appeal

Brighter Futures, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's charity, is looking for adventurous local people to take part in a mass skydive and raise money for their new breast cancer treatment appeal.

The Trust wants to offer intra-operative radiotherapy for breast cancer at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.  This pioneering treatment is new to the UK and is currently not available in the South West; however doctors say it would make a big difference to the lives of up to 150 women a year in Swindon. They need to raise £75,000 to fund the treatment.

The 'Big Thrill' is a mass jump where all of the skydivers who sign up will jump on the same day.  The event is taking place on Saturday 9 August 2014 at the Swindon Jump Centre.

Head of Fundraising for Brighter Futures, Jen Green said: "This is a great opportunity for people who have always wanted to do a skydive to finally give it a go! Whether they choose a thrilling tandem skydive or an exhilarating solo jump from 3,000 feet, it will definitely be the experience of a lifetime."

The charity is calling for as many people as possible to get in touch and take part in the mass skydive.  All participants are asked to raise a minimum of £360 in sponsorship money.

The new treatment GWH hopes to provide involves giving a single dose of radiotherapy to patients while they are undergoing breast surgery.  This means that after surgery patients will not have to wait several weeks for radiotherapy, and will not have to travel to radiotherapy centres in Oxford or Bath for frequent treatment.

Jen continues: "This is a fantastic cause and we hope the people of Swindon and beyond get behind us.  Most of us will know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, and this new treatment will make such a difference to the lives of women coping with the disease."

Brighter Futures supports the Great Western Hospital and community healthcare across Wiltshire, helping to fund equipment, new treatments and services which are not funded through the NHS budget.
