Competition launched for artwork ideas

Great Western Hospital is launching a competition to get local children to come up with ideas for decorating their new children's Emergency Department.

Last month building work began to transform the current Emergency Department at the hospital involving a complete refurbishment of the department and the creation of a new dedicated children's unit.

The new design will mean that children coming in for emergency treatment will have their own waiting and treatment area with private cubicles. The aim is to provide families with a more calm and child-friendly environment, away from the busy general waiting area for adults.

As part of the refurbishment, the Emergency Department team want local children to help them come up with ideas for decorating the cubicles once the children's unit is built.

Victoria Brown, Head of Service for Unscheduled Care at Great Western Hospital said:

"We would like children from the local area and schools to draw some pictures based on their favourite children's book, or favourite TV character for example, and with the help of a local artist we will then bring their artwork to life and use their ideas as inspiration to decorate the cubicles within the new children's area.

Children can often be very worried or scared when they have to come in for emergency treatment, and we want to provide a more calm, friendly and colourful environment for them.  It will be fantastic to have input from children in the local area to help us decorate our new children's unit and make it extra special.  We are all very excited about the competition and look forward to seeing the entries."
