New mobile unit brings treatment closer to patients

Cancer patients living around Malmesbury may no longer have to travel to the Great Western Hospital for chemotherapy treatment, thanks to a state-of-the-art Mobile Chemotherapy Unit, which will provide the same treatment much closer to home.

The new Mobile Chemotherapy Unit will be based at Malmesbury Primary Care Centre every Friday and is already treating up to 10 patients a week at other locations across Wiltshire. The Unit is currently based at Savernake Hospital in Marlborough every Thursday.

Funded by national cancer charity 'Hope for Tomorrow', the £260,000 Unit is one of only four of its type in the country. In a unique partnership, the charity owns and maintains the Unit and nurses from the Great Western Hospital administer the chemotherapy, supported by Wiltshire Council.

Dr Lindsay Whittam, Lead Cancer Clinician at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are very grateful to Hope for Tomorrow for providing this fantastic facility which is already making an enormous difference to our patients who live outside of Swindon. It means patients spend less time travelling which we know can be tiring and costly."

Patients under the care of the Great Western Hospital, whose treatment meets the criteria, will be offered the option of receiving their treatment on the Unit.

Christine Mills MBE, Founder and Trustee of charity Hope for Tomorrow, said: "I am delighted that our Wiltshire Unit named Kayleigh is about to commence giving treatments in Malmesbury, as are the Team here at Hope for Tomorrow. Our aim is to alleviate some of the stresses and strains associated with patients travelling to receive their treatment, and the Wiltshire Unit we know, will help many patients living in the Malmesbury area.  We would like to thank the people of Malmesbury and the surrounding area for their support, which has been really wonderful."

Maggie Rae, corporate director for Wiltshire Council said: "We are delighted that Hope for Tomorrow has been able to provide a Mobile Chemotherapy Unit for Wiltshire, and that we have been able to contribute to getting it launched by Great Western Hospital.  Bringing safe and effective treatment closer to home is a key objective for our work in cancer, and the Unit is a significant advance in this area."
