New NHS policies come into force

From Tuesday 1 January 2019, the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be a no smoking Trust, this means that smoking will not be permitted anywhere onsite.

It comes as new policies to make all NHS sites smoke free are introduced and means the Trust will now support a total ban on smoking anywhere on site including the grounds and in vehicles in car parks.

Smoking is a significant public health issue in England and a leading cause of preventable ill health, premature death and disability. Smoking caused over 484,000 hospital admissions in England during 2017.

For patients, stopping smoking before or during a hospital visit can also speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

Julie Marshman, Chief Nurse at the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "Clean air is important for everyone, especially in a hospital environment. Making our Trust a no smoking site is the right thing to do for all of our staff, patients and visitors.

"We understand that quitting smoking is a personal choice, but there are lots of resources available to help those who do want to give it up."
