Help with communication: hearing impairments

Hearing loops

Hearing loops are situated at reception desks in the Great Western Hospital (GWH):

There is also a portable loop available for use: the Trust has access to Sonido Digital Listeners, a portable amplifier that helps you hear conversations more clearly, whether you have a hearing aid or not.

British Sign Language (BSL) intrepreting

Outpatients

To arrange for an interpreter for BSL please contact the Booking Centre to confirm that this has been booked.

This should have been arranged prior to your visit, but if there is a problem with this then please contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS).

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department has access to an online interpreter service for BSL to allow effective communication during emergency admissions while arrangements for a visiting interpreter are organised.

Other resources

All wards within the hospital have resource folders on sensory impairment with signs that can be placed above patients' beds if required.

Please see Resources at the Great Western Hospital for people with a hearing impairment.

Registered hearing dogs for the deaf are allowed on-site (please report to each ward/department reception upon arrival).
