Colleagues to walk from GWH to Stratton store

Staff from Sainsbury's in Stratton will swap their price guns for walking boots this weekend as they take part in a charity hike for Brighter Futures' Radiotherapy Appeal.

More than 10 colleagues will set off from the Great Western Hospital at 11am on Saturday 5 September on a five mile trek back to the Oxford Road store.

The walkers will be making stops along the way at the Sun Inn on Marlborough Road and The White Hart on Oxford Road to give locals the opportunity to dig deep and throw some silver in the donation buckets.

Charity of the year

This is just one of the many fundraising events organised by staff at Sainsbury's since shoppers voted for Brighter Futures, the charity of Great Western Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust, to be the store's Charity of the Year.

Jennifer Green, Head of Brighter Futures, said: "We're thrilled to have the support of Sainsbury's in Stratton, one of the biggest supermarkets in Swindon.

"Every penny raised by the events organised by staff will go a long way in shortening the cancer journey for thousands of patients living in Swindon and Wiltshire."

All money raised by the charity walk will help Brighter Futures raise £2.9 million to equip a brand new radiotherapy centre at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

"Shortening the cancer journey"

Currently, patients requiring vital radiotherapy treatment must make a gruelling 70 mile round trip to the nearest centre in Oxford.

Patients will often have to make this journey every day for anything up to seven weeks.

Val Atwell, Store Manager of Sainsbury's Stratton, said: "We have a calendar of fundraising events that we will be holding this year to raise money for this fantastic cause.

"I'm truly proud of the way that our staff have got behind the Radiotherapy Appeal and I hope that our customers will continue to support us in all the events we hold."

People can sponsor staff taking part in the walk by donating money at the store or by calling 01793 828255.
