Funding to go towards major refurbishment

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been awarded £400,000 to upgrade their maternity unit - The Princess Anne Wing - based at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.

The money will go towards a major refurbishment of the unit to improve the birthing environment for mothers and their partners. Upgrades include:

  • 10 delivery suites including one with a birthing pool will be refurbished.
  • Bathroom and toilet facilities will be upgraded by removing some of the older baths and installing modern shower facilities. This will give women more choice about whether they want to bath or shower.
  • A new lighting system will mean mothers will be able to give birth in a more natural light and staff will have more comfortable light to work in.

Teresa Harding, General Manager for the Women's & Children's Directorate, said: "This is great news for local women planning a birth with us and also for our staff. We asked our mums and dads about what changes they would like to see - so we know these are the improvements that will make a big difference to local people. As well as generally revamping the Unit, so it provides a more modern and comfortable birthing experience for mothers, the improvements will also provide a more pleasant working environment for staff."

The Trust applied for the funding last November and is one of over 100 hospitals across the country to win a share of the £25 million Government fund. Bids were judged by a panel that included representatives from the Royal College of Midwives and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides acute hospital services (at the Great Western Hospital) and community health and maternity services across Wiltshire and parts of Bath and North East Somerset. These services include community hospitals, community nursing, therapists, children's and young people's services along with hospital based maternity services from the Princess Anne Wing at the Royal United Hospital in Bath.
