New arrivals to receieve matching hats and blankets

Staff at Chippenham Birthing Centre have launched a new community project where older members of the community can give a special gift to the newest arrivals.

Entitled 'Knitting for Newborns', the project will see every baby born at Chippenham Birthing Centre given a little, hand knitted hat and matching blanket to go home with.  The blankets and hats have been kindly knitted and donated to the birth centre by members of the public.

Meg Cooper, Midwife at Chippenham Birthing Centre said: "We are very excited to be launching our 'Knitting for Newborns' project and are very thankful to our team of knitters in the community who have already donated around 50 sets of beautiful hats and blankets."

Staff from the birth centre are calling on other keen knitters in the community to take part in the project and help keep their supplies up.

Meg continues:  "We deliver around 30 babies a month here so obviously we want to ensure we have enough knitted hats and blankets to meet demand.  Anyone who likes knitting is welcome to take part and we can provide the measurements, the more the people who want to support us the better."

Midwives will be promoting the project at their upcoming Mother and Baby Roadshow taking place at Neeld Hall in Chippenham on Saturday 28 September from 10am - 3pm.

In its second year running the fundraising roadshow will see a host of stalls from local businesses, a luxury raffle, refreshments, and children's entertainment including a visit from Peppa Pig and  Gilbert Bear.

Last year the money raised from the roadshow was used to refurbish one of the delivery rooms at the birth centre with a new birthing pool, new lighting and soft furnishings.  Proceeds from this year's roadshow will go towards refurbishment of one of the other delivery rooms, helping create a more homely, less clinical environment for mothers and their babies.
