Update on traffic issues leading onto GWH

Information about recent traffic issues at the hospital

For approximately 30-40 minutes from 9am on Wednesday 4th January 2012 there was a significant influx of traffic onto the Great Western Hospital site which caused problems with queuing traffic back onto the A419.  The problems were caused by a combination of factors including:

  • the return to work after the Christmas period for a large proportion of staff, at a time when we lifted restrictions for parking on the hospital site for the Christmas break.
  • Also the hospital is extremely busy at the moment with more patients than usual under our care which has lead to some additional traffic onto the site.

Restrictions for staff will be back in force from Monday 9th January 2012 and we anticipate that this will help ease the sorts of traffic problems experienced earlier this week.

Why the new system is needed

We have experienced similar issues in the past where there are simply too many cars coming onto the site and, as we are limited in the number of spaces we are able to provide, we introduced the new barrier system and other changes to free up more spaces for patients and visitors and limit the number of staff cars on site.

Ambulance access under blue light

Before the new system was introduced, since September 2011 there have been a dozen occasions when we have had to open the emergency access route at the back of the hospital for ambulances due to the volume of traffic coming into the hospital.  This ensures ambulances under blue light conditions are not hindered in anyway in getting onto the hospital site.

Technical problems fixed

The new barrier system for car parking itself is working as it should and there are enough spaces available for patients and visitors.  The technical problems we experienced with the system in early December have been fixed and the system is now much more reliable than when it was first installed so we hope car park users will notice the improvement.

We apologise for any inconvenience this delay may have caused for our patients, visitors and staff and we will be proactively managing the traffic flow onto the site until the staff parking restrictions come back into force on Monday 9th January 2012.
