Celebrating excellence at annual staff awards

Outstanding achievements showcased at awards ceremony

For the third year running staff at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have celebrated their achievements and commitment to improve patient care over the last 12 months at a special awards ceremony at the STEAM Museum in Swindon on Friday 22nd June. 

Over 400 people, from Doctors, Nurses, Midwives, therapists and a range of other Trust staff attended the awards.  Also attending the ceremony was David Brewer, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, and Cllr Mick Bray, Mayor of Swindon.  There were 28 finalists up for the chance to win one of six awards.  The Awards were established to recognise those staff who deliver an exceptional service to patients.

Nerissa Vaughan, Chief Executive at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said:  "The Staff Excellence Awards have gone from strength to strength since they were introduced in 2010.  This year they are doubly special because as well as recognising the efforts of staff at GWH in Swindon, they also recognise the hard work of staff across the Wiltshire community, from parts of Bath and North East Somerset, Salisbury to Chippenham, Warminster to Trowbridge, Melksham and beyond."

"We received over 200 nominations for the awards put forward by the staff themselves from across the hospital and the community.  The finalists were shortlisted because of their professionalism and commitment to their patients."

 "This year's winners are true role models to everyone who works for the Trust in the passion they have for their work and the way they do their best for the people around them.

 "The awards give our staff the opportunity to take time out from their busy day jobs, and it is great to see them rewarded in this way."
 
The Team of the Year Award for improvements in service which have significantly enhanced patient experience was given to the Ambulatory Care Unit and Acute Medical Unit.  They have delivered a new and innovative service, leading to significant improvements for patients, including rapid turnarounds and reduced length of stay. The team have also delivered efficiencies and financial savings for the Trust. 

Charlotte Cannon, Consultant Physician, Acute Medical Unit said:  "The whole AMU team are delighted to have been nominated for the Team of the Year Award, and to have won makes us very proud.  The changes we have delivered have been as a result of 18 months hard work and winning this award is recognition and reward for the team's dedication. We are proud of our achievements so far and continue to be motivated to deliver further improvements on behalf of our patients and the Trust.  We would like to acknowledge the support of the whole hospital who have worked with us to deliver these changes, including the two other finalists for this award, Mortuary Team and the Equipment Library."

The People's Choice Award, a new category where nominations were sought direct from patients, using letters and other patient feedback received during the year, was won by the Cardiac Rehab Team.  The patient who put forward the team for this award had a cardiac arrest and Stent fitting earlier this year. They nominated the team for the support they have been given since then and for being given a new lease of life with many more years to look forward to.

Stephanie Taylor, Cardiac Rehabilitation said:  "We are very honoured to win the People's Choice Award; it is very special and demonstrates the value patients place on our service. I am immensely proud of my team, to be one of the three finalists was amazing, but to actually win is fantastic.  I want to thank the team, and the staff who assist with our programmes including hospital and community dieticians, Physiotherapy assistants, Pharmacy staff, Cardiologists, and our Volunteers whose help is invaluable."

The STAR of the Year Award is linked to our Trust values: Service, Teamwork, Ambition and Respect (STAR), and recognises staff who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to providing an excellent, professional and caring service. The award went to Elizabeth Clarke and Andrea Goodman, who work as Theatre Reception Clerks.  They work at the front door of a busy and integral department and were given the award for their positive attitudes and strong customer service in dealing every day with a range of visitors and enquiries.

Elizabeth and Andrea were both delighted to be joint winners: "We are very proud to have won this award; it is wonderful to get recognition for ourselves and for Theatres. We were over the moon when we found out we'd been no nominated, and would like to thank Louise Taylor, Business Support Manager, in Theatres and Anaesthetics for nominating us, and everyone who voted for us."

The Leadership Award was given to a leader who has inspired others by acting as an excellent role model. Chris Grist, General Manager, Unscheduled and Community Care, was given the award for her passion and for supporting and inspiring her colleagues.

On receiving the award Chris said: "Being a good leader is not down to any one individual it relies on a good team.  My job is to create the right environment so that members of my team can shine and do the things they do best which are to do their best for patients.  I am delighted to win this award, it is recognition of the good work we are doing within the directorate which is making a real difference.  As someone with almost 34 years working in the NHS, moving from being a Radiographer and into management, I am proud that I am able to play a small part in changing peoples' lives."

With high quality, safe service being the top priority for the Trust the winner of the Quality & Safety Award was chosen by looking at the range of quality indicators such as MRSA screening, mandatory training, patient falls and patient complaints to see which ward had performed the best.  The winning ward was Beech Ward who provide care for women undergoing gynaecological or breast surgery or experiencing problems in early pregnancy.
 
Val Mortimer, Senior Sister, Beech Ward said:  "We are ecstatic to have won the Quality and Safety Award.  We constantly work hard to achieve audits, so it is a wonderful feeling to achieve such positive recognition and see all our hard work pay off.  I am so proud of the team, it was amazing to be nominated but to win is a huge morale boost for them.  Our aim now is to ensure that we keep delivering excellent results."

The Special Achievement Award which recognises staff who have achieved something truly remarkable for patients, their team or the wider Trust, was awarded to Una Sperring, Orthoptist.  Una provided outstanding support and leadership to her team and department during a challenging time involving significant change.  She was chosen for the way she acts as an inspirational role model, leading by example, and maintaining professionalism.

On receiving the award Una said: "I am really thrilled to win this award, it's not often you get the chance to win things, so this is very nice.  I was surprised when I found out my team had nominated me and touched that they thought that much of me.  They are brilliant, and the reason why I work so hard at what I do is because of them, they are great people and we all pull together.  It really is a pleasure to work here."
